Sir Nicholas Winton
Rescuer
Hello, my name is Aaron Czajkowski, and I chose to learn more about this man because he is a great hero. My class watched a video called Nicholas Winton. The Power of Good, and I was inspired to choose this individual for our project. I decided to send a letter to the editor in order to spread his story to a wide variety of people.
Here is my letter to the editor:
As the so-called “Accountant of Auschwitz” (Oskar Groening) is on trial for his part in the most horrific genocide in the history of the world, everyone is hearing about the many evil people of the Holocaust. I am writing to tell about one of the good people involved in the Holocaust. In 1938, after the Nazis annexed large parts of western Czechoslovakia, Nicholas Winton was sure that the rest of the country would follow. Winton, the 28 year old stockbroker from London, and others believing that war was imminent decided to take action. At the time there was no organization in Prague to handle all of the refugee children. Winton decided to start his own operation. Operating out of a hotel dining room in Prague, Winton met with the thousands of parents lined up to save their children. Winton worked long hours into the night to collect funding and find foster homes for the children. On March 14, 1939 the first train left Czechoslovakia full of saved children. Winton went on to set up seven more transport trains, saving a total of 669 children. I believe when all we hear is hate, we must also focus on the good people who worked to rise against the hate.
